So Marc, you drill out the waste area using the pin vises, then use a #11 knife to finish the carving. Am I correct? I am not so good at chisels & knives, so I use a Foredom flex drive with Swiss burrs. I must admit chisels & knives produce a nicer finish.

Hello Keith,
no, not exactly. With sewing needles I created real small gouges (with a grinder) which allows me to sculpt as you would do in real size.
First I glue the drawing on the wood, and I empty the unnecessary spaces using what I can (drill or pin vises). I left small stands so I can stick small items separately. Then I really began the carving work with the St Jacques, and the separate elements first glued on a piece of ebony so I can sculpt easily. The most useful tools were the curved gouge and the chisel. Blade #65 has also served me well. Chisels and knives are not that hard to use after all, but I had to buy a good book to learn how to do !!

Bonjour Marc,
I think I can see in your work the teachings of Bernard Frolich. His book ,"The Art of Ship Modeling" is in my library & it is a classic. I think though, that there is no better teacher than actually picking up the tools & trying to do it one's self. Keep going Marc, I will continue to watch. Soleil Royal has lots of carving ---Bonne chance.

Wonderful and very fine work! I realized you use needles for hand sewing. I also use a needle. I do semicircular chisels of needles for sewing machines (of all sizes).
