Hi everyone,
I will be posting my progress of construction of the model Le Mercure in 1:36 scale using ANCRE plans.
In 2007 I studied under the instruction of Dr Michael (who is building Rivoli on this forum) in St Petersburgh and am using his technologies for the construction of the model. As such you will see many similarities in our photos.
The construction of Le Mercure is only a part time job for me so at times it is slow.
We are entering an Australian summer shortly and the temperature in my workshop can exceed 50 C which is impossible to work in. For the next week I will be insulating the walls and ceiling in my workshop to try and lower the temperature to a bearable level.
My other interests include playing squash, reading about history and listening to Bach (always when I build the model!). I am 34 years old.....

I have started the construction by carefully analyzing the plans and making sure the various views are consistent with one another. This is a long process and must be done carefully. Any errors must be corrected on the plans themselves.
The two halves of the hull are built separately and joined later. Each half is built on a building board.

Some photos of the first few frames.
The port and starboard side of a frame are cut together.
As you can see in the last photo a paper template is constructed for every frame. Thiis paper template is photocopied and then cut and placed onto the Pine wood board to cut the shape of the frame.

The reinforcing frames are shown attached to their reinforcing beam which runs from bow to stern. Every 6th frame in the model is a reinforcing frame. The "gaps" will all be filled in with additional frames.

I have three different fret saws too. For the different size of nailfiles. It is very convenient to use not changing nailfiles. Dobrenko cannot learn anybody. Not capable. Antonio studied experience of Doctor Michael

Hello all,
No, the 3 manual hand saws that you can see hanging from the wall are not for cutting the frames. These hand saws are only for small work. For cutting the frames of the hull (which you can see in my photos) I use a PROXXON scroll saw with multiple speeds.
After cutting the frames on the Proxxon scroll saw I use a disk sander to "clean up" the edge as cleanly as possible.
Thank you for the comments on my workshop. This week the workshop will be transformed very substantially and will look different. I must insert insulation in the walls to prevent the high temperatures! I will provide photos of my progress.
Thanks.

Hi Roma,
Yes, I remember you from MSW! Thank you for your kind words.
Currently I will post the same photographs as can be found on MSW but as my progress continues you will see new photos.
My apologies but I cannot write in Russian. A big thank you to Alex B who is taking the time to translate all of my text from English to Russian.
Here are some more photos of the frames which are inserted in between the reinforcing frames. These frames are not attached to the long reinforcing keelson. Please note that each of these frames is actually two frames joined - the Port and Starboard sides. Toothpicks hold them together. The frames for both sides are cut together on the Proxxon scroll saw to ensure that they are perfectly symmetrical. They can then be easily separated by just pulling them apart with your hands and removing the toothpicks.

And more....
If the plans are correct and the frames sizes measured as accurately as possible from the plans and then cut correctly the hull should flow smoothly with no ridges or bumps in it. This makes the final sanding job much easier.
