Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a brig (circa 1830), built plank on frame and fully rigged with original sails. A fine example representing one of the many armed brigs built and in service around this date. However, the absence of the fourth row of reef points in the topsails makes it certain that this is not a regular man-of-war. Added to this is the narrow beam, a feature that would have been incorporated in the designs of the navy’s Surveyor, Sir William Symonds. The model depicts a vessel measuring 104 feet along the gun deck by 28 feet in the beam and is similar in size to the ‘Beagle’ as used by Charles Darwin and Captain Fitzroy on their famous scientific expeditions.

Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull model of a 10-gun brig (circa 1825) built plank on frame and fully rigged with original masts, spars and modern rigging. This model probably represents one of the large ‘Cadmus’-class of brigs built from 1808 onwards, the last being ‘Termagant’ of 1837. This highly detailed model is complete with a variety of fittings such as a capstan rigged with bars, deck hatches and gratings, the large riding bitts in the bow and a finely carved wooden figurehead on the beakhead. Notice also the large square gunports fitted with lids that are hinged in the middle for the use of the short but powerful carronades.

Scale: 1:48? A modern exhibition style waterline model of the merchant brig ‘Peter & Sarah’ (circa 1809) built plank on frame and fully rigged with sails set. This model is complete with scale figures and represents a typical merchant trading brig of the early nineteenth century of about 47 tons gross. The rig is known as a ‘polacca’ where the foremast is a single ‘pole’ spar as opposed the traditional two part upper and lower sectioned type, and the fore course is rigged to a boom rather than loose footed. The ‘Peter & Sarah’ was registered at Bideford, Devon and traded in general cargo around most of the major ports in the British Isles, including pilchards from Newquay to the Mediterranean.

Scale: 1:32. A clinker-built contemporary full hull model of the ‘Swallow’ (1779), a 14-gun brig, built in the Georgian style. The model is decked, equipped and scenic. It is depicted on a slipway and can be used for launching demonstrations. There is painted decoration on the stern including a winged fish and the name ‘Swallow’. Sweep ports were fitted between the midship gunports. Built by Ladd, Dover, the ‘Swallow’ measured 79 feet along the upper deck by 27 feet in the beam, displacing 226 tons. It was armed with fourteen 6-pounders. ‘Swallow’ was one of a class of brig-rigged sloops built in private shipyards for the Royal Navy. Its career at sea was short lived: in 1781 it was driven ashore by four American privateers and wrecked near Long Island.

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary waterline model of an armed brig (1830) fully rigged and under sail on a painted scenic base. It is complete with three boats rigged from stern and quarter davits, a capstan and binnacle on deck and 14 guns mounted on carriages along a single gun deck. The figurehead depicts a half bust of a Greek or Roman warrior, with a pair of trail boards either side aft inscribed with the name ‘Orion’. Although this model cannot be identified against an actual vessel of this name, the absence of a fourth reef in the topsail makes it almost certain that this is not a regular man-of-war. It does not have the required beam introduced by Sir William Symonds in the 1830s, but at this scale, the model represents a vessel measuring 104 feet along the gun deck by 28 feet in the beam. However, the presence of the gaff instead of the spritsail yard dates the rigging no earlier than 1830. The model is known to have been made by Thomas W. Smith when only 15 years old, taking four years to complete. Apart from the cannon and a few of the metal fittings, the model was made from scratch entirely by his own hands.

Scale: unknown. A contemporary full hull model of the missionary cargo brig ‘John Wesley’ (1846). The hull is constructed from wood laid plank on frame with the added detail of two planks on the upper whale made from bone. There is a half bust figurehead of John Wesley at the bow, a large windlass on the foredeck and pin rails mounted along the inwales above deck. The model was supposedly made by the ship’s Master, George Buck. These vessels supplied and supported the work of missionaries around the world and this particular vessel had a long life as it was photographed at anchor in Double Bay in the state of Victoria, Australia, in about 1914.

HMS Britomart (1847); Fighting vessel; Brig; 8 guns


Scale: 1:48. A contemporary half block model of HMS Britomart (1847), an 8 gun brig. The hull is carved from a solid block of wood (?) and painted a metallic bronze colour below the waterline with black topsides above separated by a thin white line. Along the broadside are six gunports cut into the hull and highlighted by a creamy white horizontal band at gundeck level. The clipper-shaped bow is fitted with headrails and a trailboard (modern replacement) with the relatively flat sheer running aft to a small angled square stern. There are two sets of channels fitted with chainplates and deadeyes along the bulwarks. The main deck is flush, fitted with two stump masts, and runs aft finishing with a small angled stern with a rudder below fitted with gudgeons and pintles. The whole model is fitted on a rectangular wooden backboard which is painted a creamy white and surrounded by a stained moulded edging which is inscribed with "(0)" amidships below the keel. There is a detached plaque which is inscribed "205 Britomart 8 guns 1847 Scale 1/48 (1/2in to 1') A small brig built at Pembroke. Coastguard service 1857 broken up 1874. Dimensions Gun deck 93ft. Beam? 3ins."

Pilot(1838) Brig; 16 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of the 16-gun brig ‘Pilot’ (1838), complete with stump masts and bowsprit, the whole mounted on turned wooden pillars secured inside an original display case. The hull is copper-sheathed (painted) below the waterline and has Greek or Roman male figurehead mounted on the bow. The channels, together with chains and deadeyes, are fitted to the upper bulwarks externally, whilst on deck are a variety of fittings such as the wheel, capstan, skylights and hatches. The ‘Pilot’ was designed by Sir William Symonds, Chief Surveyor of the Navy and built at Plymouth in 1838. Measuring 105 feet in length by 33 in the beam this vessel and other of its class were classed as ‘sloops rigged as brigs’ but others were simply ‘brigs’ and had 12 guns instead of 16. The armament consisted of two 18-pounders and fourteen 32-pounders and carried a compliment of 130 crew. Other ships built on the same lines included ‘Acorn’, ‘Albatross’, ‘Arab’, ‘Bittern’, ‘Despatch’, ‘Elk’, ‘Fantome’, ‘Greacian’, ‘Heron’, ‘Kangaroo’, ‘Mauner’, ‘Martin’, and ‘Persian’. After a fairly uneventful career, the ‘Pilot’ was broken up in 1862.

HMS Pantaloon (1831); Fighting vessel; Brig; 10 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary half block model of HMS Pantaloon (1831), a 10 gun brig. The hull is carved from a solid block of wood (?) and is painted a light metallic bronze colour ,with black topsides to the level of the gunwale and divided by a thin white line along the waterline. There are seven gunports let into the hull and fitted with six canon (modern). Between the top of the bulwarks and the gunports are two sets of channels rigged with chainplates and deadeyes. The bow is complete with headrails just aft of the full length figurehead and a cathead. There is a flat and angled stern gallery above the sternpost which is fitted with a rudder complete with gudgeons and pintles. The flush deck is fitted with two stump masts which are painted a creamy white colour. The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard which is painted a creamy white colour surrounded by a stained moulded edging on which is inscribed "(8)" amidships under the keel.

HMS Siren(1841) Brig 16 Guns

Scale: 1: 48. A contemporary full hull model of the 16-gun sailing brig ‘Siren’ (1841). The solid wooden hull is made in ‘bread and butter’ fashion and is complete with two stump masts, channels with deadeyes, a number of deck fittings including hatches, skylight and a capstan. The model is mounted on turned brass pillars and fitted to an original wooden baseboard. This model also represents the following vessels in this class of brig: HMS ‘Atalanta’; HMS ‘Camilla’; HMS ‘Hellena’; HMS ‘Jumna’; HMS ‘Mosquito’ and HMS ‘Rover’. The ‘Siren’ was built at HM Dockyard Woolwich as the first of a large class of brigs that were used for a variety of roles. Measuring 110 feet along the gundeck by 34 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 549 gross, these vessels were armed with 16 carronades mounted on wooden slide carriages. It was used for gunnery purposes at Portsmouth from 1866 and eventually removed from the Navy List in 1874.

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model in frame of an 18-gun brig (1830) mounted on its original baseboard together with its original glazed display case. The model clearly demonstrates an interesting system of framing using timber of extremely light scantlings (dimensions) in conjunction with a design of hull that was intended to give the vessel lightness, and hence speed, combined with strength. It also illustrates the process of building a wooden hull as planking has been fastened around the main wales, and the thin strips of wood near the keel and around the bilge, known as ribbands, are there to support the frames ready for planking up. Although pierced for 18 guns, it probably represents a naval vessel built to the dimensions of a 10-gun brig, with a length of 90 feet by 24 feet in the beam and a depth of 11 feet.

Contemporary full hull model of the ‘Lady Nelson’ (1799), built at a scale of 1:32. The model, which is decked, has been constructed in the solid from planks of wood assembled in the 'bread and butter' fashion. The frames have been drawn onto paper, which has then been glued to the hull and painted with a layer of varnish. This in some ways uses the 'navy board' style to highlight the overall shape of the very shallow hull, which enabled the 'Lady Nelson' to carry out survey work around the shallows of the coastlines. To help overcome leeway and sail efficiently with a shallow draught, sliding keels designed by Captain John Schank (1740-1823) were fitted. The casing for this can be seen on the deck of the model between the main hatch and deckhouse. The 'Lady Nelson' was originally rigged as a cutter but this was changed to that of a brig when it was fitted for the long voyage to Australia for survey work in 1800. The vessel was later destroyed by the inhabitants of Babber Island, Timor in 1825. Although the 'Lady Nelson' is recorded as being fitted with three sliding keels or centreboards the model is only fitted with one.
